Default P0449 Code and Auto Fuel Cut-off

All,

My 09 Sonata MIL recently came on and noticed today that when I filled up at the gas station, the fuel pump continued to auto shut off as though the tank was full of gas. This auto shut-off continued the entire fill up of my gas tank. When I got home, I diagnosed my car and received the P0449 code (Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit Intermittent). I suspect I either have a failed CCV or a clog in my gas tank vent line. Since I drive close to 100 miles a day, I am already out of the initial 60K warranty, so I will be doing the work; however, I do not have a service manual. Any advice or service manual out there?

Thanks.

I think your on the right track. Im guessing it's the vent filter is clogged up but the filter is part of the close canister valve. Also there is a short hose off the end of the close canister valve that could be clogged up too. You will see this house when you get to the canister close valve. To get to the valve you will need to remove the left rear wheel inner finder lining. It's mounted to the lower fuel neck.

So I replaced the Close Canister Valve and the Fuel Tank Air Filter, cleared the DTC, and took the car for a test drive and sure enough, the same code (P0449) came back. Have not tried to fill the gas tank again, but I imagine it will remain slow and the fuel pump will trigger off every ~1/2 gallon. My thoughts are the PCSV is failed (although the measured electrical resistance is in SPEC) or the charcoal canister/vent line is clogged therefore making the system think the CCV is shut without a command to do so. Any thoughts anyone?

After all this, I have found the cause.....the CANISTER AIR FILTER. I had overlooked the fact that the Hyundai Service Manual had troubleshooting for each DTC (under the Fuel System Tab). Originally, I replaced the CCV which has an attached air filter, however, if you follow the same vent line down towards the charcoal canister, there is a cylinder shaped filter called the canister air filter. This canister air filter was presenting enough air resistance to make the system think that the CCV was shut, therefore causing the P0449 DTC. Had the EVAP system diagrams in the service manual indicated that this filter existed, I would have checked this much earlier......so the lesson is learned, follow the troubleshooting in the DTC section, this would have been resolved and $45 saved by not replacing an already good CCV. (Also, believe the electrical resistance readings when you see them, my original CCV had SAT electrical resistance, but I replaced it anyways.....shame on me)

I just got the same code P0449 on my 2009 Sonata 2.4L with 37,500 miles. I have no trouble filling it up with gas, just a check engine light. I cleared the code and it came back on the next day. I ordered the the gas tank air filter which is also called by the dealer www.conicellihyundaiparts.com a shut off valve part # 31453-3K500. My Maintenance schedule says to change it at this mileage. Could you tell me the part # for the canister air filter, just in-case the air filter with the CCV doesn't do the trick.. Filters are not under warranty so I dare not bring it to the dealer until I try a few things. Looks like the gas tank has to come out if it turns out to be the charcoal canister....Hope not.....

The filter is part of the close canister valve. Factory warranty on that part is 5/60.
