My friend has an '02 Santa Fe w/89k on it and he asked me to do his timing belt. Normally it's not a problem, but I had heard that it's a bit different on these cars so I thought I'd come here to ask for some advice. I've heard that these cars have 2 timing belts, or something along those lines. I've priced the T-Belt Kit, ACC belts and Water Pump at about $270. If it's just as straight forward as moving the accessories out of the way, removing engine mounts and supporting the motor, removing the timing belt covers + tensioner + belt, and lining up the marks and replacing it i'll do it. If not I'll just tell him to go to the dealership or something. What exactly needs to be done on this car to replace the timing belt? I've also seen some diagrams talking about sticking a screwdriver in the balancing shaft or something...couldn't quite make it out because they were small images.

I've tried registering for hmaservice.com but whenever I click on the terms and agreement link on the registration page it gives me a blank screen, and i can't progress in the registration steps

Yes there are two belts in the timing belt cover, A timing belt an an balancer shaft belt(much smaller belt). You do need to replace both! an replace the timing belt auto adjuster as well. Check all pulleys but not necssary to replace.(but do check them for noise an loose).

Remove all drive belts, crank pulley, water pump pulley, an then timing cover assy.
Move engine to TDC an remove timing belt.
Remove balancer belt by removing the balance belt tension pulley.(you will need to remove the crank/timing belt pulley an crank sensor shutter wheel in order to remove balancer belt). Install new balancer belt with balancer marks lined up. now install shutter wheel an crank/timing pulley.
Now for the timing belt, The small pulley/oil pump pulley this must be lined up right or you will have a vibration in engine! Two ways to do this, Remove plug in side of block insert screw driver with pully lined up with mark, if you can push screw driver in its right, if you cant its hits the shaft its not right, rotate pulley 360 the screw driver should go in now! Or the easiest way to do this is, When you rotate the pulley you will feel the counter weight, If the pulley wants to naturaly line up with the marks its right, If the pulley falls away from the marks its 360 out! This sould like its hard to do but once your there you will see its not that bad!
Once you have all marks lined up put belt on install new Timing belt auto adjuster, Recheck all your marks again you will be done!

Here are some photos as well to help you!

Parts info I do rec you use Hyundai Parts!

Timing belt 24312-38220
Balancer belt 23356-38020
Timing belt auto adjuster 24410-38001
Note: Give the parts guy your VIN in order to make sure all parts are right!

I read that you have to remove the camshaft sprockets, is that true? Or is that only when doing the Oil Pump?

There is no need to remove cam sprocket to do just the timing belt.

Did you try a F5 refresh?

The site has been under reconstruction. Like Admin1 said, if you'd like a manual. Let us know.

Hey I was wondering if i could get a shop manuel for my 2006 santa fe. I have been reading all the posts on the timeing belt for the 2.4l and have picked up alot of info on this engine. i am almost done with the replacement of the crank shaft postion sensor and timing belt. but if possible i would like to have a shop manuel for future DIY's with this vehical. i can not belive the dealer wanted 1100$ + parts to do this work. Thanks in advance and from what i have seen so far this site is one of the better ones.. hope it stays around LOTS of GREAT info hear, saved me tons of head achs i am sure.
