I had to stop work on my Santa Fe before and when I continued with the advice I was got earlier I had another problem come up . The lower bolt on the alternator, which goes through two ears and a bracket ,only slides back about an inch before hitting another part of the engine . thus making it impossible to remove the bolt and most importantly the dang alternator. Unfortunately it seems like this simple repair has become a headache. I will not give up !!! The dealership wanted over $600.00 to replace the serpentine belt and alternator. Not in my lifetime!! I have a couple of ideas to get this to work including possibly jacking the motor to clear the bolt head. I am only lacking about 1/4" to 3/8 " to clear the obstruction. If anybody has any
suggestions to help solve this problem I would greatly appreciate them .

I'm not sure what part of the engine it could be hitting. Maybe this picture will help.
There is a better picture in the media gallery.

There is no reason to lift the engine. The upper bolt that is a 12mm remove it. Then that bracket bolts to the engine block. Remove the two 12mm bolts holding it to the engine an you should be able to get it out. If you still cant can you take some pictures? It might help us in helping you.

Im currently doing the same repair, and the part that is in the way is the bracket that goes around and supports the axle. I have a picture that i hope is able to be included in this reply cause im doing this from my iphone, but if ya give me an email to send the picture to id be more then glad, but the bolt is the rusty brown piece above the axle boot its kinda hard to see but thats the bottom alternator bolt backed out as far as possible and hitting the axle support bracket. If anyone know any otherway of takening this bolt out please share, i am going to try and remove the bracket and let ya know how that goes.

Ughh ok in order to remove the bracket the axle needs to be removed which im NOT gonna do, its actually easier to cut the bolt push it out some more and cut it again, then just replace the nut n bolt for $3, and this time put the bolt in from the outside going in... Im not suggesting this is what anyone els should do, just what im doing :) hey it works

OMG.... So i wasn able to cut the bolt ecause its a special bolt so i went threw the hassle of taking the axle out and removing the bracket it was hitting, an after removing the alternator i discovered that NONE of this is needed, after you loosen the bottom bolt there is no need to remove the bolt because it sits in a "C" shaped holder and all ya need to do is just pry the alternator out with the bolt still thru both brackets of the alternator!!!! Learn from my mistakes!!

Are you absolutly positive there is no slot on the bottom bracket? You can really see it untill you remove the alternator... So pry the alternator upwards out of the slot, of course make sure the upper bolt and connectors are removed and that there is room for the alternator to be pryed upwards. Post back on ur results

my efforts have gone from bad to worse.
while removing engine bracket the socket has droped behind the water pump.
thats the "bad"
the"worse" is that the water pump pully bolts are rounded off........
where is the "slot" for the pivot bolt?
regards

Your Santa Fe is a 4cyl. So is little different from the V6. But you should be able to sneak it out the top. If the bolts are rounded off its going to be tough. Might have to put vise grips on the bolts. They are 10mm bolts.

The mounting point circled in green is where the top of the alternaor mounts to therea no slot there.. The slot is on the bottom mounting point. What you need to do is remove that top bolt and just loosen the bottom bolt and if u piviot the top of the alternator away from its mointing point then the bottom bolt just pry up THATS where the slot is... And this is for the V6 santa fe correct? I dont know how the 4cyl is set up but would imagine pretty simple
