I'm been hearing about a noise (thumping) in the right rear in Elantras. Other forums has brought this topic up. It seems worse in the 2009's. I can hear it in my 2008 gls.
Over small bumps/holes the right rear really makes a noise. It sounds like you have a bad sway bar bushing.
Any body have any clues.

What it sounds like to is sway bar links. We are seeing many on 07 through 08. If you want to know if it is the sway bar bushings or links, Park some were you can rock it side to side. Have some one set inside an listen for the noise. If you hear it craw under the car have someone rock the car again an put your hand on sway bar in the rear. If you feel it then move to the link. But chances are if you hear it rocking it side to side it is either links or bushings.

Is this why I'm hearing a thumping noise?
First two is the right rear-- the later the left rear.
Does this look normal?

Its really hard to tell but look ok. Do you hear this noise only when going over bumps? Or can you also hear the noise if your turning? (Going straight sway the car left to right aggressively)

yeah, slow to moderate speeds(10-70kph) thumps on right rear. Seems to be a problem with all Elantras.

Had the '08 Elantra in for servicing and asked if they could check the noise in the right rear. Here's the quote off the repair slip.
Complaint: Clunking in right rear over bumps
Cause: Road tested and confirmed noise. Was able to find technical tip regarding removing 5mm of shock absorber rod.
Correction: Remove shocks and remove 5mm off of shock absorber rods. Reassemble - road tested - OK

I must know different terminology. What is a shock absorber rod?

Well I have to apologize the thumping or clunking is back this morning. I called the service manager and told what had happen. He said it's one of the things they try after they check the suspension. He said if that does not work, then I'll have to wait. Hyundai knows about it and will be fixing it as a technical service bulletin. They will repair the ones that have this issue.
So sorry again hang in there the fix is on the way. He did tell me unofficially what the problem is but I rather not say at this time, until the matter is solved.

More News..... I received this e-mail this morning, after I contacted them about the problem I had.
So this is out now and it's official
[B]Good morning xxx and xxxxxxx
Thank you for contacting our office.
There is a new updated shock absorber for the Elantras which should become available to Hyundai dealerships over the course of the next months. The product is currently being tested at our Korea manufacturer. We suggest contacting your dealership towards the end of next month (May 2010) for any updates.

Well thats news to me. Did they check your sway bar links? The reason I ask is because over the last few months Ive replace twenty or so. Its gotten so bad that even know the right side is bad I replace both sides. Not saying its bad on your car but it well cause a thump noise when going over small bumps or turning right or left. How I diagnose this concern is, I have someone rocking the car side to side aggressively while i crawl under the car a hold the sway bar link to feel the movement.

Yes Admin, they checked that first, then they tried the 5mm off the shock/strut.
My car has been doing it since it left the lot new.

Up-date.........
Took the Elantra in this morning and told them about the right rear noise, but now the whole rear end seemed to be rattling, like sway bar bushings were lose.
2 hours later got a call they told me that they replace the sway bar links.. rattle is gone but the original problem is still there. Car has 43,000km.
There is a new strut kit coming, when, don't hold your breath.
Cheers

I'm not really surprised that they found bad sway bar links seeing we are seeing nearly five or six a week. That is a very odd concern with the struts you having. I wonder if in Canada the struts are different than here in US? I would think sense you have your concern documented even if you drive out of your warranty they will still have to fix it.

Another up-date... been in contact with Hyundai Canada[which seem to take a very long time. They kept asking when, where, why and at what speed. I told what they needed but apprehensive to contact dealership, on the context they couldn't do anything because they were waiting for Hyundai Canada for the magical strut that would end all my troubles.
Here is their reply.
Appointment has been made for Dec. 1/10
Good day Mr. Smith
I’ve spoken with the service manager at S***** Hyundai who has advised of the historical repairs on your vehicle. There are new struts available for a “thumping” noise on Elantra, but are in limited quantities. There is an internal process to obtain these but the vehicle must have a recent inspection. Jim, service manager has suggested to make an appointment with them to bring in the vehicle for further inspections and if you wish, discuss with him directly the issue.
I am certain that S**** Hyundai will come to a favorable solution for you and your vehicle.

Sounds like they're trying to make it right. Keep bending Hyundai's ear, if the dealer doesn't take care of your problem.

Up-date ... car went to the shop on friday. Tech refastened strut rubber boot that had fallen down and said that it's all fixed. Left the shop returned right away and asked if the service manager would like to come for a drive with and listen to the really loud thumping in the right rear. He said no, but would get the technician to go with me. Which he did. He sat in the back seat and said wow that is loud, not just the normal Hyundai Elantra thump. we are going to order a new strut, should be in next week.
Told them that's what I have been trying to tell you guys for the last year and a half. :computer::deadhorse::doh:
maybe some day I'll be able to leave the land of Oz

It doesn't sound like they have been able to properly isolate the noise on your car honestly. This noise you hear, do you hear it more when your driving straight or light side to side turning? If you set in the car an have someone push on the rear bumper can you reproduce the sound? Also rocking the car side to side? Or does it have to be moving down the road?

It really sounds like like the upper part of the strut is not connected. Tried that in the driveway, no noises. When driving anywhere from 70kph down to 10kph or approx. 43 mph to 10 mph. the handling is fine, but it sounds like someone was under the car rattling a wooden handle. The links and bushings are fine.

Car went back in and they found the right rear brake caliper had too much movement and could cause the noise. Brake caliper was order and later installed. Took the car for a drive and it's still there and they say the same thing bring it back and we keep trying to find it. It's hard when your late getting to work because your GD car is in the shop again and again. I told them I'm ready to give up. Sent off a letter to Hyundai and am waiting to hear what next to do.

I've also paid hundreds of dollars on the right rear brake because the caliper had seized . replaced rotor - pads - guides, out of my own pocket, because they (dealership) said it was my fault for not lubricating the guides every year.

That sux. To me it sounds like they have no idea what the problem is, so they are just throwing parts on the car. Noises are very hard to trouble shoot, especially in the rear. Could be something in the trunk, and it's not uncommon for a tool to get lost during manufacturing. I've found tools inside doors, in duct work...I'm guessing they've checked the control arm bushings and sway bar link. When they replaced the strut, did they replace the strut bearing?
Kayakman
01-24-2011, 02:27 AM
That is something I never thought of. Every thing has been either replaced or checked many times. But I never thought of the strut bearing. Next time I talk to them I'll asked about it
thanks
PS - I didn't know there was a strut bearing for the rear of the car.

Have been in contact with Hyundai and the dealership. They are sending for 2 reworked or rebuilt or a different strut that fits the car and should be in sometime next week. Hyundai has been keeping in touch with my problem and seem to be on a mission to rid me of this problem. Hopefully by the end of the Feb. 19 I'll be able to give a reply

It's only used on the 4G Elantra, but it looks like they didn't start using them til May 2010.

Thanks Rsquared, They just got them on this afternoon, really didn't have a chance to assess these units. Was on highway and smooth roads, but I'll be able to tell you tomorrow when I head into the city.
May 2010??? that would mean the last batch of 2010's got these struts.

Well the clunking/thumping is gone!!!!It's been :frusty:long and tiresome journey, but it's over....
After the dealer installed Part Number:55311-2H101 shock absorber assy.. You end up with a bit firmer ride but seem to handle better in the turns with less lean.
When I asked my service manager when the time comes to replace these new struts what do i asked for? He said the number stated on your receipt, but he also said that in the future the 55311-2H200 strut will no longer be able to purchased.
I want to thank all at :hail:Myhundaiforums.com for your support.
Cheers
