Does anyone have any idea why the vertical tail lights use dual filiment bulbs, but only use one of the filiments? Seems a waste of money to buy dual filiment bulbs and not use them. Wouldn't it be cool to have the whole rear end light up when you stepped on the brake pedal?

Thanks for the answers,
David

This is very interesting. I wasn't aware it was a dual filament bulb.

I'll see if I can get a decent picture and post it. I've always wondered about the modern running lights on the rear of todays cars, all that red area on the lens's, and only a couple of bulbs there. On the touring there are 4 or 5 bulbs in each side (I can't remember off hand) that light it up quite well, and use the bright filiment of dual filiment bulbs, the dim filiment doesn't do anything.

I would like to run the dim side as the running lights, and then have the bright side come on with the brake, or at least the emergency flashers (which use the amber turn signal bulbs) and light up the rear end. Perhaps it would be too bright for brake lights, but it certainly would catch attention.

I just switched the tail light on my Harley to LED (and the way it comes, out of the box is standard brightness, and it has two brighter settings for the brake that you can use.) The brightest is too bright for me, so I run the middle setting, and maybe it's my imagination, but it seems that most cars now stay about 20 feet farther back than before.
