Hi everyone,
Here I am again... I am so disappointed with this car, I cannot begin to tell you. It is a commuter car but even that, this car - which by the way is not even three years old - is already falling apart.
Now, there is this horrible grinding noise coming from the back of the car. Don't know how else to describe it. It gets really loud when I am desaccelerating and when coming to a stop. It is located in the back of the car and there is absolutely no engine light coming on. The noise started yesterday afternoon and got really bad today on my commute home.
Can this be a break issue? Power train? Any ideas? I need to take it to a repair shop asap but wanted to see if anyone can give me some ideas on what the issue is.
Thank you so much in advance to those who respond.

Could be a lot of things but without being able to see or hear it it's difficult to say exactly what it may be. Could be brakes, suspension or wheel bearings.

Thank you for your reply CBX! Now, out of the three you have listed, which one is covered under the car warranty?

CBX - I just you tubed the wheel bearing noise and that is exactly what my car sounds like. Wow - am I going to be taken to the cleaners with this repair?

Can't answer your question on warranty because I have no experience with them but I imagine they try to get out of warranty repairs wherever possible. IMO they should be covered based on the age of your listed vehicle.
Generally speaking wheel bearings should last a very long time. Usually the life of the car. I have been doing repairs to my vehicles for 40 years and I don't recall ever replacing one. Bearings are very sensitive to dirt and moisture. What has probably happened is that the seal that protects the bearing has torn or come apart and allowed moisture and dirt to enter the bearing itself.
Don't drive the car for too long like that particularly at freeway speeds. It's just a matter of time before the bearing comes apart which can lead to more serious problems including death (yours).

I have already made an appointment and will be taking the car to the dealership to have it repaired tomorrow. I have also looked up on the net to see if those are usually covered under the warranty and the answer is probably not... so, there is another repair on the car that is not even three years old... I can honestly say - this will be my one and only Hyundai as I don't plan on buying another ever again.
Thank you again for all of your help!!!

How many miles are on your car? If you are under 60,000 miles then I think the wheel bearings will still be covered. If the remaining warranty is only covering powertrain then they will probably not be covered.
Personally, I doubt it is a wheel bearing as in your description it seems to be a noise happening under braking. Also, wheel bearings tend to go bad over a long period of time and the noise they make will get louder as time goes on and will be apparent when going through curves in the road. The noise should also get louder and softer with changes in the speed of the car.
If it's brakes then the repair will not be covered under warranty. Brakes are a maintenance item and should be serviced/inspected regularly. Have you ever had them serviced? If they were serviced fairly recently then you might want to go back to the shop that worked on them.

Update - the problem was the two rear break pads - they got to the point were they were metal on metal.
I am very upset with the dealer because I took the car for the 60K maintenance in August to them and they did not say anything regarding the wear on the breaks.
Nonetheless, in a two month span, I have spent almost $1K on maintenance for this car which I don't think is worth it. Lesson learned - stay with what works. I had a Honda Civic that died on my after 9 years and not once, I took that car to have anything done to it (as far as major repairs...) I will be going back to Honda after I sell this car.
Thank you all for your replies.

Have you ever had the front brakes done? Usually those go before the rears.
Anyway it's one of those things that wear based on use although I would agree that back brakes should maybe last longer but I wouldn't call it a major repair. The dealership likely didn't even check them when you brought the car in for the 60k check.
I sold a 96 Mercury Cougar with almost 100K miles on it to buy my Sonata. That car still had the original battery, brakes, suspension, etc. It was a very good car and some times I regret selling it but we needed a 4 door vehicle.

From 06-09 The sonata had issues with the rear brakes. There are clips that go in between the pad an the caliper. It will develop rust between the clip an the caliper an will cause abnormal brake wear. Shame on them not catching it at the 60k service! Poor business!

I had the same problem with my 07 sonata. Rear brake pads not releasing all the way and heating up. This happened even 12 months after I bought it new. The calibre sliders require clean and lube twice a year(for me), just so the NAPA premium pads do not wear prematurely. You would think there would be manufacture service notice for a repair.
