Hi all,
I have a 96 Lantra Sportswagon, I've just replaced the front brake pads and the car is driving great, but now the ABS light turns on once I start driving and stays on the whole time. I didn't even know that I had ABS on this car...
Just wondering if this happens everytime you change the brakes and needs to be turned off by the dealer or is there a way that I can turn the light off?
It's not a huge deal... but it is a bit annoying :)
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers,
Pawel

Chances are if the ABS light is on yes it does have ABS. Sense the light does not come on till you start moving it is a very good chance it is a Wheel Speen Sensor. But the real bad thing is only one way to know is to hook up the car to a scaner to read codes.

Thanks mate, I thought that might be the case. I've got one of those Haynes manuals and it shows a way to read the codes without the scaner, just having trouble locating the ABS computer under the bonnet. Just thought that maybe there's another way to turn it off, I'll have to have a peek at those sensors and maybe give them a clean.
Thanks for the help and quick reply, I appreciate it.
Cheers.

If you just did a brake job you might check an see if you bumped a Wheel Speen Sensor conector? might just be as easy as pluging it back in!~

Hi, I think I got to the bottom of the problem... While changing the brakes I also changed the drivers side cv shaft. I got the car up this morning to look at the sensors and noticed that the new cv joint doesn't have the teeth in front of the sensor as on the other wheel. As I understand it, I think that's how the wheel sensor can tell if the wheel is spinning, it counts the teeth as they move accross the sensor, (correct me if I'm wrong here please)
The cv shaft that I installed has no teeth, it's just smooth, so as soon as I start moving, bam... the sensor thinks the wheel is not moving and the light goes on indicating a problem. If this is not the case please could someone let me know, I'd hate to replace the cv shaft again if that's not the problem.
Alternately, is there a way to turn off abs altogether and just have regular brakes? I live in Perth and we don't get any extreme weather, just a bit of rain in June, July and August, dry as a desert in the other months. I lived in Toronto for about 15 years and had some really bad weather experience there...
Thank you for the replies and help so far, you've been great!!!!!

Well that really is a bummer!! Other than replacing the shaft again, you can just remove the fuse under the hood labled ABS there bigger fuses! there might even be two of them! But if the fuse is removed the ABS will not work an you will have normal brakes! Now the ABS light may stay on! but you can also remove the IP an remove the bulb! :becky:

Thanks for all of your help. I decided to go ahead and replace the cv shaft... again :bowl:
I called the place I got it from and they said, no worries bring in the wrong one and my broken one so they can match it up exactly and they'll replace at no charge. :thumb:
Guess I'll be under the car again this weekend... gotta replace the back shocks as well maybe I'll get on that too.
Thanks again for all of your help, you've been very helpful, champion...:first:

Hi all,
I've got this problem sussed now. For anyone that's replacing a cv shaft, there are 3 different kinds, 1 for non-abs cars, and 2 different cv shafts if you have abs. On the abs models there are large teeth/gears on the outer cv joint on the wheel side of the joint, once you remove the cv shaft you have to count these teeth and that's the information you'll have to give the shop that gets your part.
Mine had 29, I'm not sure how many the other kind has, but those are the teeth that the speed sensor on the wheel reads, the cv shaft I installed originally was smooth and that's why the abs light would go on.
Hope that helps some of you out there, if anyone has any questions I'm happy to help out just let me know.
Cheers,
Pawel.:bananalama:
