View Full Version : 2002 Accent 1.6L bogs down at around 2000 rpm

Once I reach 2000 rpm, it feels and sounds like the car is flooding. If I press and release the pedal back and forth I can sometimes get it up to around 3500 rpm. If I floor it, it bogs down again at 2000 RPM

Compression in all four cylinders reads approx 180, both coils ohm out the same, all four injectors ohm out the same. Was getting a purge valve error code and replaced it. Still didn't fix the issue. Now I am getting 0300, 0301 and 0304. I have replaced the fuel filter and I appear to be getting enough pressure out of my fuel pump. My pressure guage maxes out at 10 and it pegged the needle. Plugs are not bad and wires are pretty new.

Problem originally happened at approx. 4000 rpm but has gotten worse.

Any ideas as to what to look at next. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like you might have an exhaust issue. Maybe the catalyst converter is plugged up. Best way to check this is to remove the upper oxygen sensor an an see if it runs better.

By upper you mean the one in the front of the engine on the manifold correct? Remove it so that it can breath out of the hole?

Yes its the one in the manifold.

Kind of load buy definitely goes above 3000 RPM. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Scared the poor dog sitting next to it. Hasn't run like that for awhile.

I don't have emissions where I live. Think I could get away with bypassing the cat? Thanks again for your help. I really do appreciate it.

If you don't think an emissions test will ever happen...you can loose the cat. Your CEL will allways stay on and your fuel mileage will suffer though...

Will it suffer slightly or significanlty? Appreciate the help. This has been stumping for a while.

Can't say for sure.

At start-up the ECM operates in open loop, so it uses the base(factory) parameters. Once the engine warms up it goes to close loop and uses input from the O2 sensors.

Thank you. Sure wish I would have subscribed to this forum sooner.

I was looking up pricing on the cat. Is there 2 cats on the 1.6l? I see one with the manifold attached and one in-line so it appears. Should I put the O2 sensor back on the manifold and take off the 2nd to determine which cat is bad?

You only have one cat, the one at the manifold. Double check the model years you were looking at, the in-line was 1999 and older.

Once I put the car on the ramps I was able to see that. Ended up "cleaning out" the cat some and the car runs great. Didn't realize how much power I had lost since the problem sneaked up on me over time. Thanks for all the help.
